Dr. Jones' research has concentrated on the social dynamics of the western Roman Empire: first through burial practice, and more recently through urbanization and the interactions in the Roman frontier zone. He has directed long-term research excavations at, and in the region around, the Roman frontier bases of Binchester, Newstead and York. In the course of all the excavations organized from the Bradford Department of Archaeological Sciences, Rick Jones has trained students in field archaeology and integrating the best modern scientific techniques into field practice.
