Canal-U_Ocms 32247 FREENG > Chinese Cultural Spaces in Africa: circulation, agencies, interactions A study of Chinese soft power in Africa and the socio-cultural spaces created by a variety of Chinese and African players. This research project was the first on a European scale to study the socio-cultural dimensions of growing Chinese presence in Africa. Beyond economic and strategic interests that are more or less controlled by States, the diversity of Chinese nationals involved – State company managers, entrepreneurs, teachers –, who capitalize experience and multiple transnational and local networks, necessitated variable modes of adaptation according to the levels and the spaces of encounter. Similarly, the plurality of the African actors involved presupposed processes of appropriation and reception of various elements of Chinese culture. New spaces of interaction and representation – spatial, visual, social, symbolic – of varying natures and scope, thus emerged here and there. This cultural encounter, which is unprecedented in its speed and range, was analyzed by a multidisciplinary team in three countries, which share different histories with the People’s Republic of China: South Africa (a Chinese diaspora since the 19th century), Mali (since Independence), and Cameroon (since the mid-1990s), focusing on three main, non-exclusive themes: institutional and urban spaces of interaction; traditional Chinese medicine in African contexts; and China and its cultural imagination. An international and multidisciplinary network of specialists on China and Africa Led by a multidisciplinary team of specialists on China and Africa, field research defined themes and conceptual frameworks. New approaches emerged: the appropriation of Chinese techniques, or designated as such, like the diagnosis machine; the emergence of an original Sino-African material culture; the diversity of actors; urban inscriptions; traditional and modern Chinese imaginations. The investigation of tensions between globalized representations of Chinese culture and the highly diverse realities of structuration in different countries offered an opportunity to constitute a new international research network. The Chinese Cultural Spaces programme was a fundamental research project granted by the french Agence nationale de la recherche headed by Jean-Pierre Dozon, and coordinated by Alexandra Galitzine-Loumpet.
