On y explique la bonne adéquation de la technologie du silicium cristallin aux segments des grandes centrales en plein champ, l'électrification des villages isolés et des applications professionnelles, ainsi que la meilleure adaptation de la technologie des films minces au marché de la micro-puissance d'intérieur, de la mini-puissance d'extérieur et au marché gigantesque qu'ouvre l'intégration au bâti. Les technologies de production de cellules sont décrites et comparées. Les différentes technologies de cellules en couches minces actuellement en concurrence sont rappelées. Les principaux fabricants de modules photovoltaïques sont brièvement décrits par pays dans le contexte de leur taille, culture et technologie.
