Il étudie en particulier les mécanismes de base d'exécution de programmes: de la micro-architecture à la notion de processus, la commutation de contexte, interruptions, appels système, la gestion des processus dans un système multi-tâches et la problématique de synchronisation de processus, la gestion de la mémoire et la mise en oeuvre de la mémoire virtuelle. Par ailleurs, il présente en pratique l'API UNIX qui implémente les différents concepts introduits en cours.
