Une ville et, à une échelle plus vaste, toute une aire métropolitaine sont en effet structurées par un ou plusieurs centres, par une multitude de pôles attractifs ou répulsifs (grand équipement public, concentration commerciale, bord de mer, friche industrielle, quartier paupérisé, etc.) et par des axes principaux (urbains, de transport, etc.). L’analyse géographique mobilise deux concepts pour caractériser l’action structurante de ces éléments.
