Sont distingués les deux grands paradigmes dans lesquels ont été (et sont toujours) réalisés les travaux destinés à comprendre comment on amène les gens à modifier leurs comportements ou à en adopter de nouveaux (respecter les limitations de vitesse, donner son sang, trier ses déchets, etc.).
