Le corpus initial de données doit être constitué par l’analyste. Il sera souvent textuel (retranscription de récits, regroupement de textes préexistants, réponses à des questionnaires), parfois iconographique. L’objectif de cet essentiel méthodologique est ainsi de présenter les principales méthodes que l’on peut employer auprès des usagers pour collecter des informations qualitatives sur leur perception de l’espace urbain, et notamment les entretiens, les questionnaires et les cartes mentales. Pour une présentation plus détaillée de ces méthodes, nous renvoyons à l'ouvrage de M. Grosjean et J.-P.
