Ce sont des savanes plus ou moins arborées, parfois arbustives ou encore herbeuses, avec 540 espèces répertoriées. Les zones humides jouent un rôle prépondérant dans l'équilibre écologique des Cerrados. C'est le cas notamment des veredas de versant, avec leurs formations de graminées et leurs sols saturés d'eau en permanence. Les termites contribuent à l'assèchement lent et progressif de ces zones humides et à la colonisation de campos herbeux par les arbres. Les défrichements mal contrôlés accélèrent les processus d'érosion et transforment les paysages.
