Dans les provinces arabes du Moyen-Orient ottoman s'opère alors des changements de nature diverse, dans les domaines politique, littéraire, artistique, social et religieux. La notion d'"éveil" - Nahda en arabe - fait son apparition, pour désigner le combat visant à extraire la société arabe de la "stagnation" (inhitat) dans laquelle elle se trouve. La Nahda est ainsi supposée annoncer une ère nouvelle de réformes et nécessairement en rupture avec un passé considéré comme obscurantiste et inique (zulm), ou tout du moins sclérosé (djumud).
