L'observation commune de patients atteints d'aphasie a conduit le Professeur Olivier Sabouraud (Neurologue, 1924-2006) et le Professeur Jean Gagnepain (Linguiste, 1923-2006) à développer une théorie sur le langage qui a radicalement changé l'approche des faits humains. Tous deux ont étendu leurs recherches à toute la pathologie neurologique dite des fonctions supérieures, et à la psychiatrie. Ils ont ainsi élaboré une théorie de la rationalité humaine dite « théorie de la médiation », basée sur quatre plans : le Signe, l'Outil, la Personne et la Norme.
